Over the weekend, the UCRFC teams traveled to Rockville, Maryland
to participate in the Maryland Exiles’ International Rugby Festival. The
U15s lost a close match to Syndenham from Kingston,
Ontario, 15-10 in their opening
match. Adam Smith and Geoff Scognamiglio each had a try in a very competitive
match. In their next match, the U15s
played the freshman team from national power, GonzagaHigh School. After falling behind 7-0, the U15s rallied to
tie the match as the forwards pushed a maul over for a try and Ryne Morrison
the difficult conversion.The match
ended in a tie with the U15s threatening but being unable to score the
winner.On Sunday, the U15s faced
another stern test against the Maryland Exiles’ JV team. The teams battled to a scoreless tie thanks
to a try saving tackle by Adam Smith.
The U19
girls struggled in their first match versus the powerful DenisonHigh School from Ontario, Canada
losing 34-0.However, the girls
regrouped in their second match and beat RooseveltHigh School from Maryland, 26-14.After falling behind 7-0 in the first minute
of the match, the girls focused their efforts and outplayed Roosevelt.Ashley Romans had 2 trys, Lucy Dawson and
Margot Sulmont each had a try, and Amelia Morabito made 3 conversions. On Sunday, the girls battled Syndenham girls
in a very even match, eventually winning 7-0. Julia Watkins made one of her
patented quick breaks off a tap penalty to score the try and Morabito converted
the try to give U19 girls a 2-1 record for the weekend.
The
U19 boys continued their winning ways going 3-0 at the festival. The Jr Mudturtles beat up on Syndenham boys, winning
50-0.In the match, Ross Kettleson,
Chris Sheehan, and Camaran Burke each had a pair of trys. Brett DeNicola and
Connor Leahey had solo trys and Leahey added 5 conversions. In their second match, the U19s outplayed a relatively
new team, GoodCounselHigh School from Maryland, 63-0.Leahey had a monster game scoring 3 trys and
4 conversions for a personal total of 23 points. Again, Chris Sheehan and Burke
had 2 trys with Brandon Deitz, Brett DeFazio, Chris Jacob, and Joe Brady each
adding one try.On Sunday, the UCRFC
club faced its toughest opponent since XavierHigh school as they took on nationally
ranked GonzagaHigh School. The U19s jumped to an early lead as Chris
Sheehan broke loose off a ruck and fed Camaran Burke who scored under the
goalposts.Leahey’s conversion hit the
upright leaving the score at 5-0.The Jr
Mudturtles had their share of possession but Gonzaga’s defense shut down the
usually powerful UCRFC backline.Gonzaga
was next to score and they put in 2 trys to take a 10-5 lead. With minutes remaining in the match, the U19s
pushed down field with Burke, Pat Taranto, and Sheehan working hard for some
positive ground.Once inside Gonzaga’s
end, the UCRFC forwards took over pounding the defense.Gonzaga resorted to killing the ball and the
referee penalized them several times. After the fourth such penalty inside 5 meters from the Gonzaga goal
line, the referee awarded a penalty try for repeated infringements. This time, Leahey’s conversion was true and
the Jr. Mudturtles had a thin 12-10 lead and the win.
Despite the scoreline, these games were closer than it looked. Xavier was match ready and made Union pay for any mistake. There are many positives that can be taken from these games. We traveled with 32 players and everyone played. We had 14 new U19 players, 4 who moved up from the U15s and 10 who never played before players! All did a great job. We learned a lot about ourselves and now know what we need to do to get better.
